Music, Performing and Visual Arts
“What lies behind us and what lies before us
are tiny matters compared to what lies within us.”
— Ralph Waldo Emerson
Hillbrook offers an extensive and high quality co-curricular Music program in which students have the opportunity to undertake individual instrumental or voice lessons with a specialist teacher. Students involved in the co-curricular Music program are encouraged to become involved in one or more of the many performance ensembles. These include: concert bands, string orchestras, choirs, stage bands, brass bands, percussion ensembles, guitar ensembles and small chamber groups. Student generated ensembles are also encouraged and supported with facilities and performance opportunities.
At Hillbrook, there is a strong link between the academic and co-curricular Music programs. This allows students to benefit academically from the effort put into their individual co-curricular activities and, in turn, classroom activities compliment the practical performance skills accordingly.
Hillbrook Drama offers students broad co-curricular opportunities that compliment the work performed within the classroom. Students are involved in a wide range of drama activities and productions that run throughout the calendar year and are well supported by students, teachers and parents alike.
We encourage our students to involve themselves in opportunities such as Theatre Sports, Basement Arts (Hillbrook’s student/teacher based theatre company) and Drama Festivals. Hillbrook Drama also invites professional local and international artists to share their skills and in turn, engage our students in modern contemporary practices.
Every two years Hillbrook stages a musical which can only be described as a production of enormous proportions. Over 100 students take part from a variety of year levels. Performed to sell out audiences, Hillbrook’s musicals have gained the respect and recognition from dramatists as being professional and memorable productions. Past musicals such as The Wizard of Oz, Grease, Pirates of Penzance, The Boyfriend and Beauty and the Beast have been one of the highlights of many students’ life at Hillbrook.
We love performing art at Hillbrook. So much so, that when our students leave at the end of Year 12, they often express how they feel a void, an empty space they seemingly can’t get rid of. Hence, Basement Arts was formed, a community theatre company that allows past students to reunite and rediscover their creative spirit.
Basement Arts is student focused; a community group that encourages both the creative team within the Drama department and past and current students to work collaboratively to shape engaging theatre.
Basement Arts produces a number of plays each year, for our current Drama students, the extended Hillbrook community and the general public. Members of the company get the opportunity to work with current students & teachers in all forms of theatre (on stage and behind the scenes). Visit our Basement Arts Facebook page for all the latest news.
Visual Art is well supported at Hillbrook. We understand that to prepare young people for an ever changing world and for careers we have not yet imagined, we must foster their adaptability, creative thinking and problem solving skills. The Art Centre is a studio-style environment where students learn to explore their creativity, build confidence and understand more about themselves and the world.
Art students explore a wide range of media areas including painting, drawing, photography (film & digital), film & video and 3D media. There are very few restrictions on what our students are able to do, particularly in the senior years. We also offer wider activities, including excursions, workshops and artists in residence. Our 'Art-rageous Tuesdays' lunch time sessions are very popular with art and non-art students looking for a bigger slice of creativity in their lives.
The Annual Hillbrook Photography Competition
Since 2004, students (past, present and future), parents and staff have submitted some amazing photos, across a range of categories, to the Hillbrook Photography Competition. Last year, the categories appraised by our expert judges were: Portrait, Light, Colour, Texture/Pattern, Hillbrook Spaces, Places Australia, Places Overseas and Flora & Fauna.
Winners and runners up in each category are awarded prizes ranging from camera equipment to professional framing, printing and art supplies. The Hillbrook Calendar is created from those images chosen in the People’s Choice Award.
